Inspired by an old black and white photo taken by Jack Dalano of a sleeping car porter employed by the Pullman Company at Union Station in Chicago, Illinois. As I painted I played Arlo Guthrie's version of The City of New Orleans, imagining the era of train travel in the first half of the 20th Century. Growing up in the 50s, I had a few opportunities to ride the Coast Daylight from Burbank north the Bay Area to visit my grandmother. I have fond memories of the Pullman Porters, always there to greet us with a warm, welcome aboard. |
