This painting was inspired by an old black and white photo taken by Arthur Rothstein while working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) in the 1930s and 40s --- a steelworker in Pennsylvania. During the Great Depression there were millions out of work and homeless --- beginning with the market crash in October 1929 and not really ending until the U.S. involvement in WW II.
