On May 30, 1431, Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for heresy at the age of 19, because she heard the voice of God and other Saints speak to her. In her final statement, she forgave her accusers and in a loud voice she cried out the Holy Name of Jesus until she was dead. Thirty years later, she was re-tried and found innocent. On May 16, 1920, nearly 489 years after they put her to death, the Catholic Church officially named Joan a Saint. Learn more. The death penalty is against the teachings of Christ. It is a final act and cannot be taken back. In the face of my enemies, When abandoned, alone and without friends, Even in the face of my own mortality, Dear Lord, ride with me into my own battles. Help me hold firm in my faith. Amen.
