We know Joseph as the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus. And we know that Joseph was a carpenter --- the Nazarenes ask about Jesus, "Isn't this the carpenter's son?" (Matthew 13:55). We also know he wasn't a wealthy man because when he took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised and Mary to be purified after the birth of Jesus, Joseph offered a sacrifice of two turtledoves. This was only allowed for those who could not afford a lamb (Luke 2:24).

The Gospels of Matthew and Luke tell us of Joseph's genealogy --- he was a descendant of King David.

Joseph was visited by an angel who announced to him the birth of a son to Mary. And again when he was instructed to take Mary and the infant Jesus to Egypt to escape the killing of all male children under the age of two by King Herod. After Herod's death, an angel came to Joseph again to tell him it was safe for them to return home to Israel.

Saint Joseph is the patron of the Universal Church, fathers, carpenters, and social justice. His feast day is May 1st.
