Saint Clare of Assisi

In 1194, Saint Clare of Assisi was born into a wealthy family. At a very early age Saint Clare was blessed with rare virtues. She was devoted to prayer and yearned for an even more spiritual life. At 18 she was inspired by Saint Francis when she heard him preach. She confided in him about her desire to follow Christ and they became good friends. She ran away from home and gave up all her wealth to live a life of poverty, self discipline and prayer. She has been given credit for giving life to the Franciscan movement… it is thought that without Saint Clare, the Franciscan order might be very different than it is today. She founded the Order of Poor Clares and led the order for 40 years. She died in 1253 and was Canonized in 1255.

“Go forth in peace… Go forth without fear…
Blessed be you, my God, for having created me.”
