Peter's Denial

At the Last Supper Jesus told His disciples that they would scatter and run when His time came.

Peter said, "I will never deny you, Lord." Jesus replied to Peter, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have three times denied that you even know me."

Later in the garden Jesus was arrested and led away. Wanting to see what was going to happen to Jesus, Peter followed at a safe distance. When they came to the palace where Jesus was tried, Peter sat near a fire that had been lit in the courtyard. Peter was hoping to blend in with the others as he waited.

ONE: In the group that was gathered around the fire was a servant girl. She saw Peter and recognized him in the firelight. She said, "This man was with Him." Peter denied the fact, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him."

TWO: A little while later someone else saw Peter and said, "You are one of them." But Peter said, "No, sir, not me!"

THREE: About an hour later another spoke more insistently, "This man was certainly with Him, for he is a Galilean." Peter responded, "My friend, I do not know what you are talking about."

At that very moment as he was saying this, a rooster crowed. Just then Jesus was being led outside. Jesus heard this and turned and looked at Peter and Peter remembered what the Lord had told him earlier that night, "Before the rooster crows today you will deny me three times."

Peter went out and wept bitterly.
