The Story:
Several years ago, I was asked to create a cross to hang in a church during Lent. Our much loved parochial vicar at the time at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church in Half Moon Bay wanted a Byzantine shaped cross, similar to that of the San Damiano Cross. He wanted Christ's figure to be welcoming and looking at us. The rest was up to me.
When he asked me, I had no idea if I could but I instantly said, YES. It was with that faith I set out the build it, creating a two-inch thick hardwood frame with birch plywood over it. The piece was a big hit. The parish wanted it to stay as a permanent installation.
I included the three main witnesses to the Crucifixion: His Mother, Mary Magdalene and the beloved Apostle John. At the top, two angels watching over Christ's triumphant exit from the tomb.
